James Cook sailed his ship “Endeavour” into pacific for a voyage of scientific exploration in 1769. In October that year, he caught sight of the east coast of the North Island. Cook then circumnavigated both the North and South Islands and mapped them carefully. After his first visit, Cook made two more journeys to NZ in 1773 and 1777, recording what he saw and collecting specimens of the plants and animals.
